What is ROPA method?

The ROPA method whose acronym means Reception of ovule from the couple in spanish, also called “shared motherhood”, is an exclusive treatment for women’s couples who want to be mothers, in which both are participants in the process. On one hand, one woman is the donor of the egg, while the other woman is the surrogate mother of the embryo.

This process, which allows both patients to actively participate in the process, consists of an IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) of the ovules of one of the women of the couple with the semen of a donor, and the uterus of the other woman where the embryo will be transferred.

Would you like to have children through shared motherhood?

The ROPA Method allows both of you to be part of the process. If you are interested, please contact us.

Tests to perform before the process

  • The ovule donor mother must undergo a Genetic Study (Karyotype) and a vaginal ultrasound to visualize the ovaries and uterus.
  • The pregnant mother will undergo a general analysis to check her health status and a vaginal ultrasound to visualize the uterine cavity, to rule out any malformation or anomaly.

Procedure phases

Hormones (GnRH analogs and gonadotropins) will be administered to the ovule donor woman, while ultrasound checks are done every few days to see how the follicles of both ovaries are growing.

Once the follicles have reached the desired number and size, the ovules are aspirated and passed to the laboratory for subsequent selection. The puncture take place in the operating room, under sedation and ultrasound control. The intervention is not painful, although it can be uncomfortable.

After selecting the most optimal ovules, they are observed for a couple of days until they are fertilized with donor sperm using the ICSI technique.

Once the ultrasound controls show that the endometrium is prepared, the embryo transfer is scheduled. The woman receiving the embryos, who will also have undergone hormonal treatment, is introduced into her uterus of the best quality embryo/embryos of those generated in the laboratory. It is a quick and painless process.

Those embryos generated that have not been transferred, if they are in good quality, will be cryopreserved for the future.

15 days after the embryo transfer, the gestant mother will undergo a blood test that will indicate if the treatment has been successful.

Not your first cycle?

If you have already undergone artificial insemination cycles without success, do not be discouraged. It is not recommended to carry out more than four cycles, since from the fourth cycle the chances of success fall markedly. If you have not reached the fourth cycle, the first cycles can provide valuable information to help us determine the origin of the problem, being able to optimize the procedure for future cycles, thus increasing the chances of pregnancy.
